How Can Molecular Biology Help the Environment? Can Genetics Fight Global Warming? | SHE-ensya Specials

Hello Science Fans!

I’m proud to share with you a video that talks about how molecular biology can help in the battle against climate change.

It’s a short lecture I prepared for a webinar hosted by the UPLB Cell Biology organization. And here, I got to talk about DNA barcoding and how it helps in the conservation of biodiversity. I also talk about how it helps in understanding the subtle differences across species that allow us to find unique adaptations to the environment. I get to talk about how we study the response of different organisms to the environment by looking at the different molecules inside them. And I also discuss the controversy behind genetic engineering and GMOs.

If you want to see how studying the DNA and the things that happen inside cells can help the environment, then please watch this video!

SHE-ensya special: Constant vigilance against science deniers and fake news

Hello Science Fans!

We are living in a strange new world.

We face both natural and man-made calamities. We are trapped in bubbles of space to minimize the spread of a disease that is, as yet, mutating. And while all of this is happening, we have also entered a decade where the space race is gearing up again, and animal cloning has reached another milestone.

So have you ever wondered if the Philippines can actually keep up?

In this video, that was specially made for the Upgrade event of the ScioMago organization, I talk about the social (and scientific) issues that we face in the country. Primarily, our tendencies towards bias, alternative facts, and fake news.

We also look at amazing products of biotechnology that was #cancelledt because of our weakness towards science-based decision making.

And so I am making a call to all science fans, we need all hands on deck to guard our society against science deniers and fake news! This is what we must do to prepare ourselves for the challenges of our brave new world!
