How can science and technology help improve quality of education and ensure access to all?

In this video, we talk about the current status of access to quality education in the world and in The Philippines, specially given the challenges of the current pandemic. We also look at the different indicators that the United Nations (UN) has created to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality education. We confront the different challenges that we face when it comes to learning, and the different systems that we need in order for us to battle ignorance! And, of course, we look at the different ways on how STEM can help achieve this goal.

So, if you want everyone to have access to equitable and high quality education, then please check out this video!

What are the Sustainable Development Goals and How Do We Achieve Them? | SHE-ensya Lecture Series (Environment)

Hello Science Fans!

What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Why do need to achieve them? And how do we achieve them?

In this video, we dive once again in a discussion about how we meet the needs of the present without sacrificing the needs of the future (aka sustainability). Lucky for us, the United Nation’s have developed a set of goals to achieve this. So, we talk about the vision behind the SDGs, we look at how they can be implemented, and we also discuss what will happen if our countries fail to achieve them.

So, if you want to help make the world a better place, please watch (and share) this video!

Is Going “Organic” Really Good for the Environment? | SHE-ensya Lecture Series (Environment)

Hello Science Fans!

Have you ever considered going “organic”? It’s one of the latest environmental fads, and we see a lot of promotions and influencers showcasing their organic practices. But is organic farming really good for the environment?

In this video, we use verified publications and scientific information to look at the current environmental impact of traditional farming methods in comparison to organic farming techniques. We even take into consideration the use of genetically modified crops, as new GM plants have now been approved for planting in The Philippines. And finally, we attempt to answer if organic farming is really the sustainable solution to providing low-cost food to the Filipino people, and the rest of the world.

So, if you want to find out the truth about organic farming, please take time to watch this video!

Comparing Environmental Fads to Environmental Facts| SHE-ensya Lecture Series (Environment)

Hello Science Fans!

Here at SHE-ensya, we believe in the continuous pursuit to debunk science myths and “alternative facts”. So in this video, we look at some environmental trends and try to assess their integrity and the facts behind them.

In this video, we use verified publications and scientific information to check if paper bags are really better alternatives to plastic bags — specially considering how many cities have started banning the use of sand bags in markets. We also look at the science behind the use of metal straws. Are they truly the more environmentally-friendly alternative to plastic straws? How many times should we use them before buying them becomes worth it? And finally, we evaluate the carbon footprint and health impacts of going vegetarian. Will a plant-based diet really be better for the planet — and for your health — given current agricultural processes?

So if you want to identify environmental facts from fiction, please take the time to watch this video!

What are Examples of Environmentally-Friendly Technology? | SHE-ensya Lecture Series (Environment)

Hello Science Fans!

Does technology and development only destroy the planet? Are there technologies designed to help the environment?

In this video, we talk about some of latest “GreenTech”, technologies that are created to help solve some of our environmental problems. Here we discuss processes that can allow us to eat delicious burgers but with a smaller carbon footprint! We also take a look at technologies that can speed up cleaning air. And to inspire us further, we look at Philippine-based technologies that could allow us to enjoy the benefits of air-conditioning, without driving us to debt (and also helps the environment in the process).

Why Should We Worry About Earth Overshoot Day? | SHE-ensya Lecture Series (Environment)

Hello Science Fans!

We had Earth Overshoot Day last July 29, 2021, and out of all environmental events — this is one that we are not supposed to celebrate.

In this video, we talk about what Earth Overshoot Day is, and the mechanisms that allow us to predict the day when we have consumed all renewable resources for the year. Each year, it seems we are making things worse but I hope we can still be hopeful and do our best to adjust!

If you want to learn about how our lifestyles consume Earth’s resources, then please watch this video!
